What is Ahimsa?

The Yoga Sutras, a centuries-old yogic text, define ahimsa as non-harming or compassion and describe it as a key trait for practitioners of yoga to cultivate. Ahimsa Yoga was born out of this idea that compassion—towards ourselves, others, and the Earth—is central to the practice and teaching of yoga. Ahimsa allows us to go beyond seeing our yoga mat as a destination and to view it instead as a path leading to deeper awareness of our own body, heart, and mind and our relationship with the world around us.
